Aiséirí provides evidence-based detoxification, treatment and rehabilitation programmes for adults and adolescents suffering from addiction.Aiséirí provides detox from alcohol and drugs depending on the needs presented at the initial assessment.

Aiséirí is a medically monitored facility and provides 24/7 nursing cover to manage detox needs. There is medical personnel on-call to manage withdrawal needs as well as consultation from Consultant Psychiatrist’s, where necessary.

The main substances treated within the detox facility are alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids. This is not an exhaustive list, which is why we urge you to contact the nursing team in Aiséirí for more information.

The detox programme and the length of stay associated, is added to the overall treatment programme. For example, in Aiséirí Cahir, the average alcohol detox is 5-7days in duration. This is added to the therapeutic 28 day programme.

Aiséirí Aislinn does not provide standalone detox.

Residential Treatment is available in our centres in Cahir and Roxburgh.

Research has consistently shown that longer stays in treatment produce the best outcomes for addiction. Our residential services are the bedrock of our treatment philosophy. Our goal is to ensure that as many clients as possible can access our specialist services quickly.

Our residential programmes range from four weeks for adults to six weeks for younger clients. We also offer a second stage six month residential treatment programme for adults who need extra support in their recovery.

The Residential Programmes are also supported by:-

  • A two-year client Continuum of Care programme which consists of a two-hour weekly meeting

  • A Concerned Person Continuum of Care programme which consists of a structured two-hour weekly meeting led by professionally trained and recognised facilitators.

The philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous is central to the programme and all participants are encouraged to use the 12-step programme in their recovery. Our treatment is based on the recognition that alcohol, drug addiction and compulsive gambling are diseases.

Total abstinence is the best way to manage the condition. We approach addiction in a holistic way, working with mind, body and spirit as components of a healthy life. Individual treatment plans may include group therapy sessions, one-to-one counselling, psycho-educational lectures, community meetings, meditation, yoga, peer support and interaction.

Each Wednesday is a family day at our centres. This day is an integral part of our programme to assist families while a person is in treatment. Everyone who is close to an addicted person is affected in a unique way; so too each person can play a key and different role in promoting recovery.

Some people need support for longer, recovery is a journey and a process. Some people cannot return to the family home or the community where they used to live. Family members and communities are in recovery as well as the individual in treatment. Some people need time to build the confidence and skills needed to function and to feel fulfilled that others may take for granted.

You can be referred to Secondary Treatment by your counsellor if you have first completed Primary Treatment. You will attend for an assessment and will be notified if you are being offered a place. You will be expected to be open, honest, ready and willing to engage and participate in the full programme.

Ceim Eile Secondary Treatment

Céim Eile is a 6-month residential programme that follows the completion of primary treatment – it is for those who need additional treatment and support due to the consequences and impact of their addiction. The need for secondary treatment is identified with your key counsellor in primary treatment. If this is recommended, your key counsellor will put forward a referral for you and then an assessment date will be set.

In a homely environment in Waterford City, Ceim Eile is often described by our residents as ‘time and space’ to get used to life in recovery. Coming to terms with the impact of addiction and learning to live in a new way can take time and some people who complete primary treatment need support for longer.

Secondary Treatment is about rebuilding all areas of your life after the consequences of addiction. This includes everything from learning about local fellowship meetings like CA, GA, NA etc, how to cope and communicate in a healthy way, exploring hobbies and interests, skills for managing finances and how to form and nurture healthy relationships. Throughout this 6 months of treatment, you will slowly but surely come to know yourself, build a solid foundation in recovery and prepare to live a meaningful life one day at a time.

Gender Specific Treatment

Culturally, In Ireland today, gender based pressures and assumptions are still very much alive. The impact of this has serious adverse effects and our Gender Specific Centres offer the opportunity to heal in a safe environment with others who truly understand.

Women are more likely to be lone parents, earn less money, are more likely to have experienced assault, trauma and abuse and are more likely to have body image dis orders. Women tend to internalise shame and can appear to function in their addiction.

Men are more likely to die from overdose, be hospitalised, get into debt and become involved in criminal behaviour due to their addiction. Men are also more likely to use substances from a younger age.

Gender makes a difference to our experiences in life and it makes a difference to how we heal and recover. Safety, acceptance and understanding are critical to respond to these deeply rooted issues and this knowledge informs our gender based responses.

Aiséirí recognises the fact that recovery from addiction is possible for all family members.  As part of our broader ‘Continuum of Care’ program we provide a weekly Concerned Persons Group for family members to offer a space for healing and recovery. This program operates from the mantra that ‘each family member has the capacity to recover irrespective as to the recovery status of the addict’.

Some of the themes and topics we explore in the Concerned Persons Group include:

  • Recovery is a Family Affair

  • Family Relapse

  • Programme of Recovery – The Twelve Steps.

  • Detachment

  • Boundaries

  • Enabling

Every Wednesday during residential treatment.

The chaos of addiction brings heart-breaking consequences to everyone connected within the family unit (and beyond). Addiction is a whole family disease. We involve family members in Family Processing Days every Wednesday, whilst their loved one is in residential treatment in Aiséirí. This provides a platform to help educate family members about the illness of addiction and how it applies to them, and also commence the Recovery Process for themselves.

Anyone who is a concerned person can make a referral to Aiséirí, however professionals who are providing services to those with addictions can include:

  • General Practitioners

  • counseling services

  • employers or employee assistance services

  • social and legal professionals such as Probation and Welfare staff

You can easily make a referral online by clicking here.
